Thousands for ducks and geese make the Katy Prairie their home during the winter. The abundance of fresh water from irrigation plus the leftover rice and grain harvest plus a little extra planted wheat for winter grazing make the area just outside Houston, Texas a waterfowler’s dream.
A the Bucksnag Hunting Club in Garwood, Texas, the management team employs the idea of “rest ponds”. These rest ponds are only hunted at the close of each season. Additionally, waterfowl are only hunted in the morning.
These rest ponds provide the migrating waterfowl with plenty of water, food and safety. The result is that the birds stay in the area for a much longer period of time. Otherwise known as pressure management.
This is a video of the texas ducks and geese on the rest ponds in mid-November.
