2016 2 State Hunt Story

Sunday, 11/6/16
Depart Home for Sioux City, IA
I35 is empty early on a Sunday morning
Drove I35 all day for 14 hrs
I rushed to get North of Dallas ASAP to avoid traffic
Hit OK at 1030
Left leg hurts all day.
Walking feels great though
Getting in & out of truck is horribly painful
Pretty sunset thru N KS. Hunting here is going to be nice
Just got whacked in windshield by a rock. Shit.
Redirect to Lincoln, NE as it’s closer than Sioux City and I’m tired.

Monday, 11/7/16
Worked and setup GPS collar for pointing alert.
Depart Lincoln @ 1230
Going cross country instead of interstate
3.5 hrs
Still no ducks on ponds – always a good sign
Leaf color change is weak this year
Corn is all harvested or going in now
Platte River is full of little islands
Sandhills seem to start N of Elk Horn River

In by 430 so they’ll roost

In place at first spot 6:10. 1 hr. Enforce sunrise to sit and listen as sun comes up

I’ve never heard AND seen leaves just falling.
#2 22 isolated pond bottom w cut corn n wheat. Zilch
#3 21 long thick windy creek bottom w green wheat. Pheasant. Resting and heard quail across the road. Chased and shot but was off property. No bird.

#B CRP and cut grain. Skip middle of 25. Walked it all. Great cover and food. Zilch
Subtract 1.75 miles from the total. Forgot to pause.

#26 C. Fence line w cut grain. Stay out of grain. BWQ covey at road corner. Jill pointed hard. Shot 1 bob. Jumped 8 pheasants off fence line. Jill liked that. Found 1 bob in the corner on return. Hunt road CRP later.

#23 b/c interior fence and trees on cut grain. Walked full 1/8 section. Jumped covey on the back fence. Shot Bob. Looked for singles and didn’t find. Found 2 singles in trees. Shot Bob. Jill found hen on fence line stuck very hard. Kicked but didn’t shoot.
#21 AB fence line Creek bottom and Corp on old beans. Jumped 3 pheasants. Jumped 1 covey. Shot 1 lost in brambles. Found single shot and lost in brambles. Jumped another covey. No shot.

Stopped to help other local family hunters find quail shot. Jumped one and founding. Grandpa asked me if I was Christian then witnessed for me.

#4 22B long fence and tree line loop on beans n corn. Zilch. Saw dead wounded deer.

#5 22C long tree line then fence on beans. Found an old MAHA sign. Zilch
Wind from the north today. Has been south all last week. Goofs me up on planning walks.
Warming up quicker and tired dog. Short easy walks.
#6 22d. Deep cone pockets but hunted yesterday. Zilch. Getting hotter. 50
#7 2B. Fence line. Looked perfect. Zilch.

# 13 2 long flat east-west tree lines on grain. Isolated. Very good. Finally a covey at the very back. I called it with a “brrrr” right before they flushed. Shot hen on the rise. Missed point flush trying to take the picture. Shot another hen on long crosser after point and flush. 2 hens total.
12:45 and done. Hot and dog wore out.

Concordia for shower and pack and off to dodge city for Kiowa weds.

#1 17S hay lot w belt E to W. Big easy first thing and wake up pheasants. Found covey way back. Shell jammed and missed twice. Didn’t find singles in heavy cover

Saw road direction sign. Freedom OK forward and protection KS right. I went straight.

Jill looks different on pheasant. Ears up excited bc she knows she can catch them.
Headed S 281 again in Watonga OK. 12:30
Off back roads and on I 40 east to OKC
OKC by 1:30. Gonna make the run home w/o stop

Sportdog collar worked great. Forgot the charger but the battery lasted almost to the end for the buzzer and still have battery left for peeper.
The handset seems fine.
