Bird Hunting in Texas – Central Zone Opening Day

Bird hunting in Texas (at least the central zone) started off in excellent form!

I hunted Dove opening day in Florence, TX at a friend’s place. Surprisingly, all the birds were Mourning Dove. I’ve seen a lot of Whitewings during the past few months so was very surprised not to see any at this location on opening day.

Nevertheless, the little grey rockets are a ton of fun to hunt.

I prefer to hunt early dove with my favorite 28 gauge.
This is my pup’s first full season and she got a great workout hunting birds.

After bird hunting in Texas, I like to cook the birds that day.

Here, I breasted them, quick fried them in a little olive oil with some random seasoning I found in my wife’s pantry. It is very easy to overcook dove and quail. I like high heat and about 45 seconds on each side – just enough so that they are still a little pink on the inside.
I had a hunger for gravy to go with my dove so I
combined a small can of mild green chiles with 1/2 cup of milk cooked slowly in the remaining oil/seasoning. It was delightful.
Bird hunting in Texas has A LOT to offer!

Texas Dove Hunting

Texas Dove Hunting Season Opens for the North and Central Zones on 9/1/10.

OK, that’s not really from Texas, it’s from Argentina, but if the flocks of Dove we’ve been seeing in the Central Texas Area are any indication of state-wide Dove flocks, it could very easily look like that on opening day!

Texas dove hunting season should be very promising this year.

Waterfowl Hunting at Austin Woods & Waters Club

I recently went to a meeting of Austin Woods & Waters, a great place to start exploring waterfowl hunting.

I found a very lively group of friends and a great roster of speakers.

In the August meeting, we were privileged to hear from Corey Mason, the Texas Parks & Wildlife Program Leader for the Migratory Shore & Upland Game Bird Program.

Corey talked specifically about hunting white wing and mourning dove in Texas.

One amazing statistic, Texas bird hunters are responsible for 60% of the dove harvest in the Central Flyway and 30% of all doves harvested nationally!

Waterfowl Hunting in Austin, Texas

If you are into waterfowl hunting and looking for duck goose hunting in Austin Texas, then Austin Woods & Waters is an excellent place to meet other waterfowlers.

You’ll find a wide variety of interests, passions, friends and even locations to hunt. They occasionally put on a group hunt for goose hunts in north Texas and have, in years past, put on Texas conservation season goose hunts.
